Russell Wilson made his Pittsburgh Steelers debut on Saturday night and gave his thoughts on taking the field for the first time as a part of the team.
Wilson was held out of the Steelers’ first preseason game against the Houston Texans on Aug. 9 in favor of him playing over the weekend against the Buffalo Bills. The 35-year-old quarterback was efficient, even if the team was unable to do much offensively. He finished by going 8-for-10 for 47 passing yards but was sacked three times over five offensive drives.
After the game, the Steelers quarterback discussed his first outing with the team. He told the media it was “good to be in the black and gold” despite the team’s offensive struggles.
“Well, we always want to win,” Wilson told the media in the team’s video. “That’s our mission every time. Obviously, we didn’t get to do it tonight. It was good to be in the black and gold, just to have the honor to wear the jersey and to be out there with our teammates, man. It’s a blessing for sure and just to be in the stadium again and playing, putting my cleats on, and getting ready to go. But we always want to be able to step on the field in between the white lines and find a way to win. We didn’t get to do that tonight.”
Wilson hasn’t been named the Week 1 starter yet but is expected to get the first nod over Justin Fields. The quarterback and the rest of the Steelers will have one more shot to get ready before the regular season on Saturday afternoon at 1 p.m. EST when they face the Detroit Lions in their final preseason tilt.
