Steelers QB Russell Wilson ‘Ready To Play’ Following Calf Injury

After a tough start to training camp for their projected starting quarterback, the Pittsburgh Steelers are ready to move forward with confidence under center this season.

Russell Wilson joined Pittsburgh in the offseason on a one-year “prove it” deal after moving on from the Denver Broncos. The success that the nine-time Pro Bowler experienced with the Seattle Seahawks over 10 seasons didn’t translate to the same success in Denver, but Wilson is hoping that a new start in Pittsburgh can be the fresh start he’s looking for.

When training camp got underway for the Steelers, Wilson’s start didn’t go as planned. The 35-year-old injured his calf early on and has been bouncing back since. As a result, Justin Fields got the start in the first preseason game while Wilson didn’t take the field. Now, the 13-year veteran doesn’t need to play the preseason, but when asked about potentially doing so, he made it clear he’s ready to take the field.

“I always want to play, no matter what,” Wilson told the media on Wednesday, as transcribed by Yardbarker’s Aaron Becker. “Anytime I can step in between the white lines, I don’t care if it’s in the parking lot, I just love playing the game. So the reality is, I’m always ready to play.”

It remains to be seen whether or not Wilson will play in the preseason, but his next shot to suit up for the Steelers is on Saturday at 7 p.m. EST as they face off with Josh Allen and the Buffalo Bills.
