Magnus Hellberg’s brief stint with the Pittsburgh Penguins has officially come to an end.
Dallas Stars general manager Jim Nill announced the club signed Hellberg to a one-year, two-way contract Tuesday, bringing him in to serve as a third-string goaltender behind Jake Oettinger and ex-Penguins netminder Casey DeSmith.
Hellberg posted a 1-1-0 record with a 2.50 goals-against average and .922 save percentage in three appearances with the Pens in 2023-24, making 33 saves in a 4-3 overtime victory against the Los Angeles Kings to pick up his lone victory. Tristan Jarry, Alex Nedeljkovic and Joel Blomqvist are expected to be the primary options for Pittsburgh in between the pipes in 2024-25.
Hellberg spent the majority of his professional career in the AHL, making 218 regular-season appearances and compiling a record of 100-83-17. He’s also posted a career goals against average of 2.52 and a save percentage of .913. He has a less impressive 8-8-1 record with a 3.08 GAA and .890 SV% in 26 career NHL appearances split between the Nashville Predators, New York Rangers, Detroit Red Wings, Ottawa Senators and the Penguins.

Dallas likely will plug him back in the AHL to begin next season, but his addition should provide the Stars with adequate emergency depth.
