Here’s Where Pirates Land On MLB.com’s New Power Rankings

The Pirates have lost seven straight

Things haven’t gone well for the Pittsburgh Pirates as of late.

After coming out of the MLB All-Star Game break with real hope and optimism for a potential postseason berth, the Pirates haven’t been able to put things together.

Pittsburgh is in the midst of a seven-game losing streak, which features a 1-9 record over their last 10. The struggles are real, as it’s now set the Pirates to 5.0 games back of the third National League Wild Card spot with a 56-61 record.

MLB.com has released its latest power rankings and Pittsburgh has continued to drop. MLB.com’s Will Leitch listed them at 18 overall in the league, questioning if they should begin to look toward next season after being swept in back-to-back series against the San Diego Padres and Los Angeles Dodgers.

“Is it time for the Pirates to shift into next-year mode,” Leitch wrote. “Their playoff odds have fallen to below 2 percent with their recent losing streak, and their rotation seems to be running out of gas. If you’re on the Paul Skenes-for-Cy-Young train, you might want to hop off soon: You have to wonder if the Pirates will shut him down at some point if they fall too far out of the race. That said: Those Andrew McCutchen homers at Dodger Stadium on Sunday were pretty freaking awesome.”
