The Pittsburgh Steelers have had their first look at one of their new quarterbacks.
Justin Fields started the Steelers’ first preseason game on Friday night against the Houston Texans, making his case for the starting job. The former Chicago Bears quarterback went 5-for-6 with 67 passing yards while running for just two yards. Unfortunately for Fields, there were that included two fumble snaps and being sacked twice. For some, that was enough to know who the starter should be for Pittsburgh come Week 1.
Former NFL head coach Herm Edwards believes that after Fields’ performance and the first preseason game, Russell Wilson is “no doubt” the starter for the Steelers.
“I think Russell Wilson is the starter,” Edwards said on ESPN’s “SportsCenter.” “No doubt Russell Wilson is the starter. Now Justin Fields, will he have a role, I think he might have a role. Maybe a slash role when the season starts. But right now, it’s Russell Wilson’s job to lose when the season starts.”
Edwards would know a thing or two about the tough decisions that Steelers head coach Mike Tomlin is facing this preseason. While Wilson didn’t take the field on Friday night, it’s clear that his experience gives him a clear advantage — especially with the struggles of Fields.
