The Pittsburgh Pirates certainly have been busy lately.
The 2024 Major League Baseball trade deadline recently passed and the Pirates were one of the more active teams ahead of it. Pittsburgh filled some roster holes without sacrificing the future and certainly is right in the mix for a National League Wild Card spot.
Pittsburgh hasn’t stopped being busy since the trade deadline and recently added hurler Josh Walker after he was designated for assignment by the New York Mets. While this is the case, he may not stick with the club for long as he was designated for assignment by Pittsburgh on Friday, according to MLB Trade Rumors’ Darragh McDonald.
“The Pirates announced they have designated left-hander Josh Walker for assignment,” McDonald said. “It was reported yesterday that the club would be selecting righty Domingo Germán but they needed a 40-man roster spot. Righty Hunter Stratton was optioned to get Germán onto the active roster.
“Walker, 29, was designated for assignment by the Mets a couple of weeks ago. The Bucs then swung a deal for him, sending rookie ball pitcher Nicolas Carreno the other way, but kept Walker at Triple-A Indianapolis. He made one appearance there before landing on the minor league injured list with an undisclosed injury. Injured players can’t be placed on outright waivers and the trade deadline has passed, so Walker will end up on release waivers in the coming days.”

Germán has more big league experience and likely is a better option for the Pirates at this point in the season. It’s unclear what will happen next with Walker but if he goes unclaimed there’s a chance he could stick with the organization in the minors.
