Report: Pirates Set To Call-Up Starting Pitcher Domingo German

German had a chance to opt out of his deal Saturday

The Pittsburgh Pirates are adding some major league experience to their pitching staff.

Domingo German and his contract are expected to be selected by the Pirates on Friday for the series against the Los Angeles Dodgers, per MLB insider Mike Rodriguez. This all comes after German exercised his opt-out clause back on July 17 before being re-signed four days later on July 21.

Mitch Keller, Paul Skenes, and Bailey Falter were set to be the three starters for the Dodgers series, so the call-up of German could either bump them back in the rotation to give them extra rest or German will be joining the bullpen.

German, 32, had another opt-out in his clause set for Saturday, so this call-up will keep the righty with the team moving forward. He has struggled at times in the minors this season, posting a 6-4 record with a 5.12 ERA and 70 strikeouts in 14 starts.

Overall in his MLB career, the 32-year-old has a 4.41 ERA through 522 1/3 innings. The right-handed pitcher is also the last pitcher in the majors to throw a perfect game, which came back on June 28, 2023, as a member of the New York Yankees.
