Pirates Young Infielder Called Most Likely Player To Be Traded In 2025

There's a lot to be excited about in Pittsburgh

There’s a whole lot to like about the Pittsburgh Pirates right now.

Pittsburgh is right in the mix for a National League Wild Card spot and currently is 4 1/2 games out of one of the spots. The Pirates are loaded with young talent and could make up the ground. Plus, the Pirates had a strong trade deadline and added some much-needed offense.

Even if 2024 isn’t the year the Pirates get back to the playoffs, there still is a lot to be excited about. Pittsburgh is on the upswing. The Pirates have performed above expectations this year and are just going to get better. Pittsburgh’s young talent is just going to get more experience and already is having success.

The Pirates aren’t too far from competing in the National League Central and therefore it wouldn’t be shocking to see moves get done after the season. Pittsburgh infielder Nick Gonzales was called the most likely player to be traded by the Pirates in 2025 by Bleacher Report’s Zachary Rymer.

“Contract Status: $740,000 salary, under club control through 2029,” Rymer said. “The Pirates had to get Isiah Kiner-Falefa in part because Gonzales wasn’t hacking it at second base. And since (Isiah Kiner-Falefa) is signed through 2025, there’s no downside for Pittsburgh in seeing what’s out there for Gonzales this winter. He was the No. 7 pick in the draft just four years ago and a top-50 prospect as recently as 2022. An enterprising team might see him as a change-of-scenery candidate.”

The Pirates don’t necessarily need to have a utility infielder thanks to the addition of Kiner-Falefa. Because of this, Gonzales now is more expendable and could fetch a pretty penny for the Pirates if they decided to make a move.
