Undrafted Steelers Rookie Becoming Roster Lock Early In Training Camp

Beanie Bishop Jr. has emerged as a starting cornerback

The Pittsburgh Steelers seemingly have found themselves an undrafted gem.

Cornerback Beanie Bishop Jr. has been one of the standouts during Pittsburgh’s training camp, according to multiple reports. The West Virginia product, who was a Big 12 Conference First-Teamer, has served as the slot cornerback on the top defense. He’s not only made a case for a roster spot but seems to be inching closer to the defense’s starting nickel cornerback.

Bishop won a pair of 1-on-1 battles against Steelers star receiver George Pickens last week, per Sports Illustrated’s Noah Strackbein. He recorded a pick-six against quarterback Justin Fields on Friday night, per Penn Live’s Steelers beat reporter Nick Farabaugh.

Bishop joins a cornerback group with 2023 second-rounder Joey Porter Jr. and 2018 second-rounder Donte Jackson. Veteran Cameron Sutton, who Pittsburgh signed to a one-year deal in June, has been suspended for the first eight games of the regular season due to violating the league’s personal conduct policy. Sutton started all 17 games for the Detroit Lions in 2023.

Bishop flew under the radar during the NFL draft process largely due to his size (5-foot-9, 182 pounds). The fact he played for three different college programs over six years before he concluded in Morgantown likely played a role, as well.

The Steelers aren’t complaining about Bishop falling through the cracks, though.
