It’s unclear who will lead the Pittsburgh Steelers offense in Week 1 of the National Football League season. The training camp quarterback battle between Russell Wilson and Justin Fields continues to leave people questioning.
Pittsburgh was active in the offseason, signing Russell Wilson following a two-year stint with the Denver Broncos. The Steelers then traded the Chicago Bears a sixth round pick, which could become a fourth round pick based on playing time, for quarterback Justin Fields.
The battle for the starting quarterback position seemed to be an open-and-shut case, with Wilson primed to be the starter. But following an injury to Wilson that has limited him in training camp, Fields has taken full advantage of the first team reps he’s been getting.
Fields has been lighting up the defense throughout training camp. He has taken a large majority of the Steelers starting reps during team drills as well. Despite this leading many to believe that Fields is earning an opportunity for the starting job, the Steelers continue to drop hints about who the starting quarterback will be, according to Sports Illustrated’s Noah Strackbein.
“Despite Fields impressing for almost a week now, Wilson remains the first quarterback to take a rep during team drills and 7-on-7.,” Strackbein reported. “Then, Fields will enter for the remainder of the period. The trend wasn’t just one practice, either. This occurs every time Wilson takes reps during drills. He’ll be the first quarterback to take a snap during 7-on-7 and then Fields will go out.”

Wilson appears to still have the starting position locked up, but if Fields continues to perform at the level he is, the Steelers will have a tough decision to make. Either way, Pittsburgh is in a better situation with Wilson or Fields than they were last season and will be looking to make a deep run in the postseason.
