Steelers UDFA Impressing In Training Camp, Could Even Earn Large Spot

The Pittsburgh Steelers certainly will look a little different in 2024.

Pittsburgh had an active offseason and made a flurry of moves. The most prominent conversation swirling around Pittsburgh right now with training camp now upon us is who will be the team’s quarterback Week 1 against the Atlanta Falcons. It seemed all but certain that Russell Wilson would be the man under center, but recently the conversation has started to change and now some even think there’s a chance that Justin Fields could end up earning the spot.

There will be plenty of discussions about the quarterback spot over the next few weeks, but that isn’t the only thing going on with the Steelers. There have been questions about the Steelers’ cornerback spot — especially with Cameron Sutton suspended for the first eight games of the season for violating the National Football League’s personal conduct policy. One player who already has impressed and could end up earning a spot is undrafted free agent Beanie Bishop, according to A to Z Sports’ Rob Gregson.

“The Pittsburgh Steelers had an active first day of pads on Tuesday, but before they got started, they had some business to take care of,” Gregson said. “Per the team, Pittsburgh released (Cornerback) Josiah Scott and (Wide Receiver) Marquez Callaway, while signing (Tight End) Matt Sokol and (Cornerback) Kyler McMichael. That all but ensures that rookie UDFA and local product Beanie Bishop will find his way onto the roster.

“Bishop has been solid through five practices in Pittsburgh, even if he got beat in the above clip by Calvin Austin III. Part of the UDFA class that looks to be stellar, no one has a better chance of making the roster out of that crop than the local WVU product Beanie Bishop. But beyond being a success story, when the news came down that Cam Sutton wouldn’t be available until Week 10, that put an onus on Bishop and Josiah Scott to compete for the starting nickel spot. But following Scott’s release, the path to starting and potentially stardom is clear for Bishop.”

The young defensive back certainly is someone to look out for. He went undrafted but shined in college. He spent time with Western Kentucky, Minnesota, and West Virginia throughout his college career. In 2023, he led the nation in both pass breakups and passes defended and was named an All-American. Hopefully, he can continue to shine in camp.
