Unfortunate news today out of the Pittsburgh Pirates practice. After showing flashes of potential in the first few days of training camp, rookie wide receiver Roman Wilson exited Tuesday’s practice with an ankle injury according to ESPN’s Brooke Pryor.
“Wilson, a third-round pick, left the team’s first padded practice on a cart after getting rolled up on at the end of a jet sweep in the team’s signature ‘seven shots’ drill,” Pryor wrote. “Wilson was making a play for the end zone when he got tackled short of the goal line. He exited the field under his own power before leaving practice.”
The severity of the ankle injury is currently unknown, but luckily Wilson was able to leave the field under his power. The Michigan product caught 48 passes for 789 yards and a dozen touchdowns in 2023. Wilson was sometimes rotating in with the first-team offense after showing flashes during the first few days of training camp.
This would be a blow to Pittsburgh if this turns out to be a serious injury. Following the trade of Diontae Johnson to the Carolina Panthers, the Steelers do not have a lot of depth at wide receiver. Pittsburgh signed both Van Jefferson and Scotty Miller during the offseason. They also have Calvin Austin III and top receiver George Pickens.
Wilson has a chance to compete for a sizable role in the Pittsburgh offense this season with no clear No. 2 wide receiver, but for now, the Steelers will hope that this is a minor injury that Wilson returns from quickly.
