There could be changes coming to the Pittsburgh Pirates in the very near future.
The 2024 Major League Baseball trade deadline is a week away and it’s clear that the Pirates are going to be busy. Pittsburgh is one of the hottest teams in baseball right now and is right in the thick of the National League Wild Card race.
Pittsburgh has a real shot at making it back to the postseason and has been extremely exciting lately. The Pirates’ starting rotation has done a lot of work for the team so far this season and it has been mentioned that the club could look for ways to bolster the offense.
One player who was mentioned as a possible fit for the Pirates ahead of the July 30th trade deadline is Colorado Rockies All-Star catcher Elías Díaz by The Athletic’s Aaron Gleeman and Tim Britton.
“The 2023 All-Star Game MVP is having another decent year at the plate, providing league-average offense at a position that lacks many such options.” Gleeman and Britton said. “Always a good thrower behind the plate, Elías Díaz has made real strides with his framing, moving from the bottom 10 in baseball to a tie for 11th so far this season. Provided he can learn a new staff on the fly, he can be a weapon defensively. Potential landing spots: Chicago Cubs, Pittsburgh Pirates, and Texas Rangers.”

If the Pirates are looking to add some offense at the catcher position, the Rockies could be a good team to call. It seems like they are going to be sellers and landing someone like Díaz would go a long way for Pittsburgh down the stretch.
