Pirates Reportedly Re-Sign Veteran Starting Pitcher To Minor League Deal

Pittsburgh made a move on Sunday

The Pittsburgh Pirates certainly are busy right now.

The 2024 Major League Baseball trade deadline will be here in just over one week and the Pirates are trending toward being one of the buyers. Pittsburgh may not make a major splash, but it is within range of a National League Wild Card spot and has been one of the most exciting teams in baseball over the last few months.

Although the Pirates surely are going to be busy ahead of the trade deadline, they have other things going on as well. Pittsburgh clearly is looking for ways to add depth throughout the organization and reportedly re-signed veteran hurler Domingo Germán to a minor league deal on Sunday, according to MLB.com’s Alex Stumpf.

“The Pirates have signed RHP Domingo Germán to a minor-league deal, per sources,” Stumpf said. “Germán opted out of his contract earlier this week, but the Pirates remained in contact.”

Germán recently opted out of his deal with the Pirates but speculation almost immediately picked up that the two sides could come together on a new deal. The former New York Yankees starter has spent the entire 2024 campaign in the minors in the Pirates’ organization to this point.

The 31-year-old has made 11 starts in the minors so far this season and has a 5.13 ERA. It’s unclear what role he will play with Pittsburgh the rest of the season, but it doesn’t hurt to bring in veteran depth with big league upside just in case injuries start to pick up.

Things are looking up for the Pirates and they clearly are looking for depth options in the case of injuries. Pittsburgh has a chance to make it back to the postseason this year and we may end up seeing Germán at the big league level at some point.
