The Pittsburgh Steelers made two roster moves ahead of the start of training camp.
NFL Training Camp has officially kicked off with teams already reporting. The Steelers still have some time to go before they get at it, as their camp is set to begin on Wednesday, July 24 at Saint Vincent College.
Before even getting to camp, the Steelers decided to make two moves — including bringing back an old friend at linebacker. Pittsburgh announced Wednesday that they have signed linebacker Tyler Matakevich to a one-year deal. As a corresponding move, they waived safety Jalen Elliott.
Matakevich was drafted by the Steelers in 2016 as a seventh-round pick. He played for four seasons with the team before moving on to the Buffalo Bills, where he has been since 2020 — playing four seasons with them as well.
The 31-year-old has been specifically a special teams performer in his career, recording an impressive 64 career special teams tackles over his eight years. Matakevich has also recorded an interception, deflected four passes, and has made an overall 132 career tackles.

He joins a linebacker core that features Patrick Queen, Alex Highsmith, and T.J. Watt. Along with training camp, Matakevich will look to prove himself in the preseason.
The Steelers will kick off their preseason games against the Houston Texans on August 9 at 7 p.m. EST.
