Pirates Select Shortstop With Ninth Overall Pick In 2024 MLB Draft

Griffin has the potential to be a five-tool player

The Pittsburgh Pirates have added more youth to the organization in the 2024 MLB Draft.

All eyes are on the Pirates in the draft this year and understandably so. Especially when you consider Pittsburgh hit a home run a year ago when they selected Paul Skenes with the first overall selection in the MLB Draft last season. This year, the Pirates had the ninth overall pick in the draft after finishing 2023 with a 76-86 record.

With the ninth pick in the draft, Pittsburgh selected shortstop/outfielder Konnor Griffin out of Jackson Prep School in Mississippi. The 18-year-old was ranked ninth in MLB.com’s prospect rankings list heading into the draft. He was also the first high school player picked in this year’s draft.

Griffin is the reigning National Gatorade High School Player of the Year — an award that has been won by the likes of Bobby Witt Jr. and Clayton Kershaw. He comes in at 6’4″ and 215 pounds with a scouting grade of 60 via MLB.com.

In his senior campaign at Jackson Prep, the shortstop hit .559 with nine home runs, 39 RBIs, and 76 runs in 43 games. Griffin has all the potential to be a five-tool player for the Pirates.
